Abnormalities of the hock are one of the most important sources of hind limb lameness in all types of horse and pony. Due to the complex soft and hard tissue anatomy of the tarsal region, and the long list of clinical conditions that affect it, many equine practitioners find it a challenging area to deal with. With a logical approach to the clinical workup of cases, plus good quality diagnostic imaging modalities such as radiography and ultrasonography, many cases seen in practice can however be diagnosed and treated by the general equine practitioner.

This course is designed to help veterinarians to understand how to approach cases of the tarsal region by using a whole morning of real case presentations to illustrate the aetiology, identification, treatment and prognosis of the common problems of the hock in the horse and pony. Delegates will be encouraged to interact fully with tutors in the case based discussions and practical sessions. In addition, there will be a practical on ultrasonography of the hock, tutor lead live examinations of clinical cases, and a wet lab with anatomical dissection of hock
structures following synovial injection techniques.

Specific areas to be covered include:

• Hard tissue problems such as osteoarthritis of the tarsocrural and distal tarsal joints
• Osteochondrosis
• Osseous cyst-like lesions
• Injuries to the sustentaculum tali, and fractures
• Soft tissue problems such as collateral ligament injuries, calcaneal bursal problems, wounds, sepsis of synovial structures, curbs, injuries to SDFT/DDFT and tarsal sheath problems.

Abnormaliteiten rondom het spronggewricht zijn één van de meest voorkomende oorzaken van achterbeenkreupelheden bij alle types paarden en ponies. Door een complexe anatomie (weke delen, botstructuren en gewrichten) is er een lange lijst van klinische condities die hier invloed op hebben. Veel paardendierenartsen vinden het een grote uitdaging om deze patiënten op te werken. Dit vraagt om een logische benadering en een goed klinisch onderzoek aangevuld met kwalitatieve diagnostische beeldvorming, waaronder röntgen en echografie. Dit lijkt in de 1^e-lijn "onmogelijk", toch kunnen met een juiste opwerking veel van deze casussen worden gediagnosticeerd én behandeld in de 1^e lijns praktijk.

Deze cursusdag bestaat uit een interactief ochtendprogramma met casussen, waarin verschillende onderwerpen aan de orde komen. Daarnaast zijn er 's middags praktische sessies ingevuld met patiënten, injecties rondom het spronggewricht en de echografie van de sprong. Er is veel tijd ingebouwd voor discussies met de betrokken docenten en deelnemers.
